Your rights

You are not a record. You are the person the record is about.

We handle your home’s information under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. That law gives you rights. It also gives duties to everyone working on this exercise. Both are set out in plain words below.

Six rights

A right with no way to use it is only a nice sentence. Each right below comes with the way you actually use it.

Right 01

We tell you why before we collect anything.

The officer must explain the visit and show you the privacy notice before they collect anything new. Not afterwards. Not only if you ask. Before.

How you use it We save which version of the notice you were shown. So there is proof it was given to you.

Read the notice

Right 02

You can have wrong details put right.

A wrong name. A wrong date of birth. Somebody who no longer lives with you. A home listed in the wrong community. You have the right to have it fixed.

How you use it Tell the officer during the visit. Or ask us to fix it afterwards. When a fix is approved, we keep the old value and the approval trail as well. Nothing is quietly overwritten.

Ask us to fix something

Right 03

You can argue with a result you do not agree with.

An ID check the office did not accept. A home marked as not found. A decision you believe is wrong. You can challenge it, and a person will look at it.

How you use it Quote the reference number from your visit. Every challenge becomes a case with a named owner, a deadline, and an age anyone can see.

Challenge a result

Right 04

You can come back later, once you have an ID.

Maybe you had no NIN, BVN or voter card on the day. Maybe your ID could not be sorted out. The door does not close. Sign up for an ID, then come back to us.

How you use it This is a real route, not a favour. In the meantime your home sits on a follow-up list. It is not removed.

Come back with an ID

Right 05

You can say no, with no punishment.

You may turn down the update, the ID check or the photo. We write your answer down plainly, and nobody will push you.

How you use it There is no fee and no punishment for saying no. A supervisor may call once, in case there was a mix-up. That is a check on the officer, not pressure on you.

Right 06

Nobody may ask you for money.

This is free. There is no fee, no contribution, no transport money and no processing charge. Not for the update. Not for the ID check. Not for the photo.

How you use it Asking you to pay is against the rules. We act on a report at once, we keep the proof, and that person can be locked out of the system.

Only what we need

Exactly what we collect — and nothing more.

We only collect what the register needs. This is not a chance to build a bigger picture of your home. There is no box for that.

Where your home is
Local Government Area (LGA), ward, community, address and landmark. We only take proof of the place where we really need it.
Who lives there
Names, sex, dates of birth or ages, how each person is related to the head of the home, whether each person still lives there, and whether anyone has died.
How to reach you
Who the head of the home is, and one phone number for the home.
One ID number
One NIN or BVN, belonging to one adult in your home. Or a voter card, on the special route for adults who need extra help. We store it hidden, with the result of the check and a reference number.
One live photo
A photo of the face of the adult being checked, taken during the visit inside the official app.
A note of the visit itself
The date and time, which officer came and in what job, which version of the privacy notice they showed you, the result, and the reasons written down.

Kept safe

What is hidden, and who can see what.

Hidden as soon as it is typed

Your NIN, BVN or voter number is hidden the moment it is typed in. After that, only the last four digits are ever shown — on screen, and in every report, file, record, message and dashboard.

Photos are kept apart

Face photos, and any data used to compare faces, are locked while they travel and while they are stored. Only certain named jobs can open them. They are left out of ordinary reports and downloads.

Staff see only what they need

Officers see only their own list of homes, and only the details the job needs. Teams who spread the word about the exercise never get lists with ID numbers on them.

Every look is written down

Who opened your record, when, and why is all written down, and that list can never be changed. Big downloads and repeated ID searches set off an alert.

How long we keep it

Each kind of data has its own set time. We keep nothing “just in case”.

  • The copy of your record on an officer’s device is locked. It goes once the visit has been sent in, or after a set time — whichever comes first.
  • Raw answers from the ID offices, case proof and access records each have their own set time to keep.
  • Photos and any document proof stay in the protected store. They never go into ordinary reporting.
  • We keep older versions of the privacy notice, so you can always see the words you were actually shown.

Who we share it with

NIMCNIN only.
The ID number you give, only so they can confirm it and compare the details we are allowed to compare.
The approved bank channelBVN only.
The same again, through a lawful and approved arrangement.
INECVoter card route only.
Your voter details, checked in an approved way.
The State Social Register Custodian, known as SOCUOwns the register.
Your updated home record, once it is approved. They own the main register.
NASSCO and the national registerWhere it applies.
Matching up with national standards, through the approved process, where that applies to this campaign.

We never sell your home’s data. We never use it for advertising. We never share it for anything outside the register and the ID checks named here.

Three ways to use any of these rights.

Do it online

A fix, a challenge, a return with a new ID, or a report about bad behaviour. You get a reference number you can quote.
